As many of your know, Lisa and I are captivated by Old Florida and “the way things used to be” previous to big condo developments and oil spills.   Recently, we had the pleasure of visiting Cross Creek the 1920′s-30′s era 72 Acre Florida Homestead and orange grove of famed author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.  Rawlings is most recognized for her novel The Yearling, which is about a Florida boy and his pet deer.  The Yearling won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and was made into a movie in 1946.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings first came to Florida to find a place to write and a “small place of enchantment to turn to.”  At Cross Creek, she found inspiration and much more in the remote wilderness and the magic of the grove.  Today, Cross Creek and the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Home contain the original furniture and is maintained as if Rawlings still lives there.

We recently had the pleasure of driving through Rockledge, Florida on the way to Cocoa Beach for a “last” weekend away.  We called it our last weekend away because the baby was due the following week.  We are happy to report we are the proud new parents of a beautiful baby girl named Kathryn Elizabeth.  We will share more about her and her new digs (nursery) in an upcoming post.  In the meantime, take a drive through Rockledge with us.

In honor of our 1st Anniversary weekend – Lisa and I are taking a pictorial trip down memory lane.  Yes, we went to a architectural salvage store on our honeymoon.   Ohmega Salvage is a favorite of ours in Berkeley.

Nowadays we tend to rate a community on the availability of old house parts.  What can I say – we are dedicated old home enthusiasts and it was on the way to Napa.

Lisa and I had the great fortune to visit Doc’s Architectural Salvage in Indianapolis last week.

Wow, we were impressed! Doc has an amazing collection of architectural pieces from across the country. Doc described himself as a aggressive collector and it shows. He has a bit of everything including antiques, lighting, doors, stained glass, vintage plumbing, fireplace mantels, back bars, reclaimed wood flooring, hardware and much more.

Man, where was my camera? Go visit and buy something!

We were on our way to the airport, so we parted with a small souvenir. We love our Loving Cup! Next time, we will be back with a cargo van.
